Marking the directorial debut of J.J Abrams, Mission Impossible III is arguably the best of the Mission Impossible films thus far, simply because it's at least the most convincing as well as the most entertaining, but it doesn't even hit near the bulls eye nonetheless because by now, we are so tired of fake masks, cool stunts and Tom Cruise saving the world.
Ethan Hunt, the best agent in the IMF, has settled down to live with his wife Julia (Michelle Monaghen), and is now training new agents for the IMF. He quickly gets sucked back into his old life when arms dealer, Owen Davien (Philip Seymour Hoffman), captures his wife Julia, promising to return her to Ethan if he can get his hands on the 'rabbit's foot' (it's never revealed what the rabbits foot is).
Mission Impossible 3 suffers from the fact that it doesn't bring much new to the franchise, and it basically replays the same formula.
I'm not that much of a fan for any of the Mission Impossible films. The film franchise started in 1996, and for me, that first movie was a real downer. The sequel, directed by Ang Lee, was even worse due to an over abundance of slo-mo action sequences. All of the movies continue to remain popular with audiences, but alas, Ethan Hunt is no James Bond and the films themselves are not that great flicks.
Fortunately enough, rather then saving the world this time, Cruise is out trying to save his wife, his family, and the film ups the ante with Abrams making the film considerably more entertaining and slightly more convincing then either it's predecessors. Therefore, Mission Impossible 3 is a fun thrill ride, and one that just might be worth watching. I would not say that about any of it's predecessors.
