On terms with today's standards, movie sequels typically outgross their predecessors, but that still doesn't mean that they are a better film. Mission Impossible 2 is a fine example of that. In my opinion, the first Mission Impossible, based off of the popular TV series of the same name, was a disappointment (fortunately it wasn't an awful expierence).
Mission Impossible 2 is almost an unbearable expierence. Part of the reason for that is the choice for director: Ang Lee. He transforms this implausible action flick into a series of slo-mo action sequences with Cruise blasting his way through the bad guys to save the world.
There are two action sequences, almost back to back, that has Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, dual-wielding Beretta 9mm pistols and blasting a private army of badguys away left and right, and having an infinite number of bullets as he does so. It's all shot in slo motion, and filled with impossible stunts. The motorcycle chase sequence that follows has Hunt and Ambrose, the bad guy, careening through the streets and shooting at each other as they do so, and then winding up on a beach where they continue to fight in nearly impossible moves all in slow motion. It makes for a good looking but completely implausible action movie. I did actually laugh a little. Don't get me wrong, I did laugh.
That's why Mission Impossible 2 is a reckless action flick, one that extends way out beyond the boundries for any action movie. If you liked the first Mission Impossible, then chances are you will like this one as well. I didn't.
