Thunderball (1965, PG)

The previous three Bond's were all classics.  Thunderball is not a classic.  It's not even a classic Bond movie.  Fortunately though, Sean Connery has already perfected his role in Goldfinger, which was a better Bond then this in almost every way.  It's directed by Terence Young, who directed two of the previous installments, Dr. No and From Russia with Love.

The plot is typical, standard Bond fair.  The film overstays it's welcome for a Bond movie at 130 minutes, the first act of the film is significantly slowly paced but nevertheless builds up to the next act of the movie in the Caribbean.

The underwater sequences are well-cheorographed and well-shot, but go on at length.  That's one of the main problems with Thunderball: every scene is elongated much longer then needed for a Bond movie.
In any sense, Thunderball isn't a great Bond flick.  It's simply standard Bond fare.
