Red Dawn, set during World War III in the 80s, gives us a movie of how a group of teenagers tried to protect their hometown in Colorado from a combined Soviet/Cuban invasion during World War III. A prologue tells of how America, Britain and China are trying to hold off against the Soviets and Cubans, who have overwhelmed most of Europe and Central America and who have just launched a massive invasion of the United States. By the way, Red Dawn was the first movie to garner a PG-13 rating from the MPAA.
The teens escape into the mountains with a few guns, and start to kill Soviet troops, taking their weapons and making a huge resistance movement in Colorado. The movie gives us a little viewpoint from the Communist perspective as well. All that the teens do is survive in the wilds and kill Soviets and attack Soviet bases, and it is only partly shown of what the teens are going through emotionally and mentally as they are all turned from their usual selves to killers.
Slowly, the teens are killed off one by one, until eventually 2 of the remaining teenagers stage a suicidal attack on the main Soviet base while the rest of the survivors escape. Part of the movie was a little too unrealistic for the way of more fighting and action and gun shooting, but I think that kids their age could have figured out or known how to use guns (they use a bow, knives, handguns, shotguns, rifles, AK-47s and an RPG in the movie).
Some people will hate Red Dawn for its view on World War III. Conservatives liked it but liberals hated it. It didn’t make totally great cinema, but it was good enough.
