A remake of the successful (financially and critically) 1968 classic had been in the works since 1988, but it did not come to the big screen until 2001. This Tim Burton directed version has a darker but same complex tone as the original.
The film again follows an astronaut who accidently travels through time and ends up on a planet ruled by apes who hunt down and capture humans for sport. He escapes with his own band of humans and leads the humans to stir up a rebellion against the apes, culminating in a finale, epic battle pitting man vs. ape.
Just like the first film the ape costumes are splendidly designed and the actors put great effort in trying to act more like an ape then a man.
Overall, I just didn’t really like the overall feel of the film with its darker tone and design that is always present in Burton’s films. The movie also has a confusing ending that doesn’t lead the film or us anywhere. This would make Burton not exactly the right choice to sit in the director’s chair for Planet of the Apes.
Most of the characters in the film are based on characters from the entire previous series, but that doesn’t save the film from ruining the work of the original classic.
