Planet of the Apes (1968, G)

Based off of the best-selling novel, Planet of the Apes switches things around from what we are used to today: apes are in control of Earth, and are hunting down primitive humans.  A group of astronauts are launched forward into time in their space shuttle, landing on this mysterious planet.  Only one of the humans survives the ape hunt on the humans.  The apes consider him a scientific discovery, but the leader of the apes holds a secret about mankind.
The film is never that silly, and explores the possible consequences of human decisions, and really what can happen (well, I don’t know for sure if apes could conquer the earth).  The movie takes itself seriously enough.
Today, the movie does seem outdated, but it is still a classic.  And it inspired a franchise that lasted for a bunch of disappointing and underwhelming films when compared to this original classic, including a newer remake that failed to even live up to this, original version.
Planet of the Apes has been parodied and copied several times by now, and it even popped a few questions about our culture and the way our society was heading after I watched it, but let’s face it, most of it is for sci-fi entertainment.
Grade: A-
