The Lord of the Rings story comes to a superb climax with The Return of the King. Visually stunning, The Return of the King is considered by many to be the best installment in the trilogy, probably because it actually finally gives a conclusion rather than a cliffhanger like the previous two movies.
Frodo and Sam, guided by Gollum, have by now come very close to Mt. Doom in Mordor. With Saruman defeated in the last movie, our band of heroes now rides to defend the country of Gondor against Sauron himself, who has unleashed several orc armies upon Gondor resulting in the magnificent Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
The Return of the King has many powerful moments in it, and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, which is one of the main focuses of the film, is filmed wonderfully and powerfully. But the best moment of the movie comes on Mt. Doom itself, where Frodo at last and finally fulfills his destiny even after falling briefly to the temptation of the ring, and the side of good prevails.
The Return of the King will appeal to people more so then the previous films (to those who don’t like Lord of the Rings); I personally like the Fellowship of the Ring the best, but the Return of the King, even at 3 ½ hours (the longest of the trilogy), provides a very strong and powerful conclusion to the trilogy. The Return of the King is the highest grossing of the trilogy, and one of the highest grossing films of all time, and gives us a fitting conclusion to the story of the Lord of the Rings.
