First Knight (1995, PG-13)

Several films have been made about the legend of King Arthur, and First Knight is just another one of those movies.  In First Knight, King Arthur, portrayed by an aged Sean Connery, has returned from war, victorious, but one of his knights has turned evil, gathered up an army, and preparing for war upon King Arthur.  While Arthur has to deal with this renegade knight, he also falls in love with the Princess Guinevere, who is substantially younger than him, and the mysterious Lancelot also shows up out of nowhere, a drifter but highly talented swordsman who also has strong feelings for Guinevere.
I am sorry to say that the movie isn’t rightly casted, Sean Connery does do a good job as Arthur, but he is just way too old, and we don’t get to see enough of Arthur’s skill in battle either; instead Lancelot is the real star of the show, even though this is a movie based off of the Arthurian legend, it has hardly anything to do with fantasy.  Not only that, but the other actors in the film felt too out of place, like that they didn’t belong there.
Though it is entertaining when you watch it, this entertainment is gone afterwards as the movie is forgettable.  First Knight is just another King Arthur/Camelot movie that doesn’t really dramatize the legend either.  So many attempts have been made to perfect or dramatize the Arthurian/Camelot legend, and I haven’t seen or heard of any that have successfully captured the true original legend.
