The Naked Gun, from the Files of Police Squad!: ***
Release Date: 1988MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: David Zucker
A funny spoof. Like most comedies of the era, it is over the top comedic and crude. First half is downright hilarious, and even while the second half loses a few of the laughs, this one is still definitely worth a look.
Narrow Margin: **
Release Date: 1990
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Peter Hyams
The Canadian Rockies are as gorgeous and Hackman's performance is as strong as ever, but this outdated thriller never succeeds in providing any descent suspense.
National Treasure: ***
Release Date: 2004MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Jon Turtletaub
It's just a fun movie that proves how you can throw in some history, comedy, action, romance and likeable characters, set it all up right, and you get a fun, appropriate, family movie.
National Treasure, Book of Secrets: ** ½
Release Date: 2007MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Jon Turtletaub
Comes in with the same witty manner as before, but loses some of the fun because it's almost a repeat of the first film. Premise is only partially interesting and not as piquant as it should be. Works fine as a theater popcorn flick.
The Nativity Story: *** ½
Release Date: 2006MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
The decisive movie about the Biblical tale of Jesus' birth. Successfully accomplishes the authentic feel for the poor, humble town of Nazareth of that era. A spectacular achievement in it's own right that echoes back to the old Biblical epics of the 50s and 60s. Only let down by a few lazy acting performances.
The Natural: *** ½
Release Date: 1983MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Barry Levinson
One of the best loved sports movies ever made. A rightfully likeable though flawed lead character is the center of an equal balance of sports action, romance, drama and supporting characters. Firmly entertaining despite it's length.
Nevada Smith: ***
Release Date: 1966MPAA Rating: NR
Director: Henry Hathaway
Personal story of revenge for his parents murders takes the titular character throughout the wild west, swamps in the southeast, and the desert in Mexico. Overbaked, but also overlooked western that delivers some goods.
The Next Three Days: ** ½
Release Date: 2010MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Paul Haggis
Piquant story about a husband who breaks his wife out of jail for a crime that she did not commit. What it lacks in moralistic sense is that we can't fully understand the motivations of the soon-to-be-hero, but carries an advantage to it's quality in making the rest of the film believable.
