I Dreamed of Africa: **
Release Date: 2000
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Hugh Hudson
Some of the roughest editing on a movie you are likely to see. A few shots of the beautiful Kenyan landscape, but when it comes down to it, this ultimately is a movie that you want to like, but can't.
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
One of the few Eastwood films not directed by Eastwood. Displays a deadly game of cat and mouse at it's very finest, and boosted further by above and beyond satisfactory acting. One sure heck of a thriller that we can thank for having a respectable sense of intelligence.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Christopher Nolan
Intertwines morale, profound character development and stunning action sequences to give the best actioner in years. An exhilarating expierence that demands your attention. Musical score and film editing are both superlative. Character driven all the way through, making for one of the most arresting movies of the decade.
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Brad Bird
Pixar scores another bullseye with this animated action comedy about a family of superheroes. The animation is sublime, and the editing is slick. Very entertaining.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Roland Emmerich
Aliens invade Earth in blasted and typical alien-invading premise. Exciting and tense, but the ending is so stupid where the humans launch a last-ditch attack on the alien invaders. This is probably best known for the famous shot when the White House is blown up.
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Steven Spielberg
A prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Any joy is sucked out in over the top violence and action, although the Oriental setting isn't a bad choice. Dispiriting and depressing. The high level of bloody violence for an action film strongly helped contribute to the creation of the PG-13 rating.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Steven Spielberg
Brings us back to the fun found in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sean Connery provides a comedic supporting role as Indy's dad. Starts off slow, but steadily gains steam as it goes along.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Steven Spielberg
Indy has aged a lot, but the franchise seemingly hasn't died down. This will be a fun ride for those who will forgive it's highly impropable plot.
Invictus: ** ½
Release Date: 2009
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Clint Eastwood
Drawn-out and tedious, but an interesting look at the rise of South Africa through the sport of rugby. Morgan Freeman scoring role as Mandela serves as a contrast to the rather tactiturn performance of Damon as the star of the rugby team.
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Ericson Core
Based on a true story, but not completely inspiring as we would want. Generally well-acted and interesting, but loses solidifying entertainment about half way through.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Jon Favreau
Action scenes disappoint, but this is a surprising upgrade over previous Marvel film outings. Boosted by splendid acting from the leads, which makes the characters all the more intriguing. A refreshingly good superhero pic, shot through with some unexpected humor.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Jon Favreau
Adds on to the first film's flaws. Action scenes still disappoint, and the villains aren't given much to do, so what's so cool when the hero takes them down in the end? Acting also isn't as strong, but most of the entertainment remains in motion. Has some fun moments, but still not near on par with the first pic.
Iron Will: **
Release Date: 1994
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Charles Haid
Semi-entertaining feature about a teen who races a team of sled dogs in a harsh Minnesota winter just after the turn of the century. The actual dog sledding scenes are unexciting, and the entire movie is formulaic from the start. Fortunately, this is watchable.
The Italian Job: **
Release Date: 2003
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Gary Gray
Slick remake of the 1969 film of the same name. A little fun, but also very lightweight. A lot of it is essentially one big car chase throughout the streets of L.A. The finale disappoints as it comes to a conclusion just as we would expect.
It's a Wonderful Life: *** ½
Release Date: 1946
MPAA Rating: NR
Director: Frank Capra
Originally a flop when first released; has since grown highly in esteem to become a loved American classic. Enjoyable, well-meaning movie for the holidays, and one that leaves impact upon you, even though it can, at times, get just a little bathetic.
