The novel by Alexandre Dumas, a long work of a man seeking revenge, has been turned into an action popcorn flick. This is a swashbuckling picture, not made in the tradition of Dumas' work, but nonetheless makes for a nice slice of light entertainment.
Jim Caviezel stars in the title role, who returns as the Count to seek revenge on those who betrayed him.
This film adaptation, directed by Kevin Reynolds, severely limits the scope of Dumas' book, but even still it deploys swashbuckling fun later to be found in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The swordfights are well staged, the film itself is moderately acted out, the script writing isn't bad, and the movie itself is entertaining. Like the dreadful 1975 version though, I don't know if Dumas would recognize this take on his work. Fortunately for us though, it's one of those typical action flicks: a flick that's fun when while we watch, but decisively forgettable afterwards.
