Batman Forever (1995, PG-13)

Rating: *1/2

Joel Schumacher replaces Tim Burton as director and Val Kilmer replaces Michael Keaton as lead actor.  The result is Batman Forever, a wild, loud, flashy and obnoxious third sequel.

This time, it’s Harvey Dent (Tommy Lee Jones), who has been turned into the villainous Two Face, that’s wreaking havoc in Gotham.  As Batman battles this new foe, the Riddler (Jim Carrey, in an outlandish performance), comes into play, as does young Dick Grayson (Chris O’Donnell), whose parents are murdered by Two-Face and is taken in by Bruce Wayne (Val Kilmer).  Grayson teams up with Batman to become Robin, and the heroic duo go up against the villainous duo.

The one, single improvement of Batman Forever over both its predecessors is that Kilmer does a good, though not overly great, job as the Caped Crusader, and is a significant improvement over Michael Keaton.  Sadly, the one and only thing that I can recommend about this movie is Kilmer's above average performance.

Other than that, Batman Forever is a ridiculous ride, as is its title.  Both Two-Face and the Riddler are much too out of place, both being so obviously influenced by the Joker of the previous movie.  Once again, I see much more effort in the concept of the villains over the heroes.  Two-Face and the Riddler are plain out insane, crazy and hysterical characters, and not as they should be at all.

The entire movie is flashy and loud.  This clearly deviates away from the tone of the previous movies, but it messes everything up yet again and is not at all in the tone of the Batman spirit.

It was also not that entertaining.  I think Schumacher turned out even worse than Burton did, and his qualities as a director in this movie are poor.  Don't let me explain how that got even worse with Batman and Robin.

I think it's obvious enough at this point that the superheroes have been exchanged in favor of the villains.  That's why Kilmer dropped out of the role after this pic was released.  The role of the Caped Crusader for Batman and Robin went to George Clooney--and he did a truly awful job.

Like I said, I don’t think Kilmer did too bad, but the film on the whole was yet another big blockbuster disappointment.
