Valkyrie (2008, PG-13)

Valkyrie tells the true story of Operation Valkyrie in World War II, which was undertaken by the German Resistance to assassinate Adolf Hitler using an explosive bomb.  Undertaken on July 20, 1944, the attempt failed and resulted in the execution of most everybody involved in it.
Valkyrie tells this story as a tense thriller, and also shows us that not all Germans were Nazis supporting Hitler.  The main focus of the movie is Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the head of the conspiracy, portrayed by Tom Cruise (who does not use a German accent like the rest of the actors).
While I wish that the movie could have focused more evenly on all, or most, of the major players of the conspiracy, it doesn’t, which doesn’t give us an all round picture of what happened but does at least give us a good view point from Stauffenberg’s point of view and includes most of what happened in the period of 1943-1944 in which the conspiracy was planned out and eventually initiated July 20 of 1944.
People will learn of the relatively unknown 20 July conspiracy, as the story of it was finally told in Valkyrie, even if it didn’t give a complete viewpoint, but gave a viewpoint well enough for people to understand what happened.  Valkyrie is one of the more meaningful thrillers out lately.
Grade: B+
