Sahara gives us a mix of James Bond and Indiana Jones type stuff. Actually filmed quite well in the Sahara Desert (hence the title) of northern Africa, Sahara follows two former Navy SEALS who search after a lost Confederate ironclad ship that reportedly escaped the Civil War in American and made its way to Mali via the Atlantic and rivers.
They get caught up with some doctors who are trying to find the cause of an epidemic plague that is spreading throughout the country. Through it all, our band of good guys also get caught up in a war between the dictator of Mali government’s forces and the Tuaregs (Malian nomadic people).
The plot may sound confusing; it’s not when you watch it on screen as it all weaves in to give us an adventure filled action film that, like all of them, boils down to pure action in the last half hour or so.
Based off of one Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt novels, Sahara was supposed to end up being a new, James Bond-type action series.
It’s not the best action/adventure film ever made, though it’s thoroughly enjoyable. It’s too bad that Sahara was a flop at the box office; therefore a planned James Bond type series has been cancelled.
