Public Enemies (2009, R)

This newer gangster action-drama focuses on two real men—gangster and public enemy number one, John Dillinger, and the FBI agent who vowed to bring him to justice, Melvin Purvis, acted by Johnny Depp and Christian Bale respectively.  The film cross cuts between the two men, one with Dillinger robbing banks and always a step ahead of the law, and the other with Purvis and his men getting clues and hunting down Dillinger and his gang.
Set in the 1930s at the height of the Great Depression, Public Enemies is a darker, more complex gangster film.  With a few very small historical inaccuracies that I can see why were changed for the movie, the main drawback of the movie is that it’s not as dramatic or enduring as I would have hoped.  The almost 2 ½ hour film failed a little too much in making me feel sorry or amazingly interested in what happened.
The movie is very entertaining and exciting—it’s a little more than just another movie to watch and is generally a well made movie. It’s simply your usual action drama that went on a little over long at over 2 hours but paid good attention to detail from the 1930’s gangster era at the height of the Great Depression.
