The Mummy, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor needlessly continues the Mummy series that should have ended with the Mummy Returns.
This time the scenery is switched from Egypt over to China, where there’s basically the same plotline as the previous movies. Once again there’s a mummy, this time a Chinese mummy rather than an Egyptian, who is waiting to be waked up from the dead too unleash an unstoppable army upon the world.
We’ve seen it all before—this change of locales can’t hide the fact that the movie fails to come up with any fresh ideas. The second half of the film is overwhelmed with action that completely drops the story of the first half (including some wild yet intelligent Yetis who come in and save the day for the heroes during a gun battle in the Himalayas. Talk about crazy).
Though a box-office success, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor also had a story that was related too much to the previous Mummy films, with the mummy awakening an army of the dead to conquer the world—just like twice before (they mention that even in the movie itself). It still has the thrills of before, but Tomb of the Dragon Emperor shouldn’t have been uncovered.
