Wrapping up his huge and immensely successful Lord of the Rings trilogy, New Zealand director Peter Jackson then turned to something that he had wanted to do for a long, long time: a remake of the 1933 classic King Kong, about an expedition that goes to an island filled with dinosaurs and ends up bringing an oversized gorilla back to New York where it wreaks havoc upon civilization.
This remake is Jackson’s vision of the film, taking advantage of the CGI and other filmmaking technology available to recreate the classic. The remake stays mostly true to the classic making only a few smaller changes.
I had really wanted to see this movie and had good expectations for it, though I feared it would turn into yet another crazy summer popcorn movie with Kong killing dinosaurs and getting machine-gunned to death upon the Empire State Building. Instead, I got much more then what I had anticipated. The movie is emotionally gripping; I have heard complains that it runs too long (the movie is just over 3 hours in total length), but this is what captures the heart of the story. Not only that, but it is very entertaining with occasional uses of cynical humor to keep us chuckling once in a while.
King Kong was one of the most expensive movies made at the time and grossed around
550 million. This version of King Kong is the decisive King Kong movie.
