The Dark Knight (2008, PG-13)

You may be shocked to read that I thought that this movie was one of the most overrated superhero films I saw—The Dark Knight has received universal critical acclaim from critics, Batman fans and ordinary people alike.  The Dark Knight felt like not as a Batman superhero movie (which it should have), but more of an overlong crime drama (the movie clocks in at 2 ½ hours), and wholly seem like a sequel to Batman Begins.
The Dark Knight doesn’t keep the character development that was given to us from a variety of characters in Batman Begins, trying to have it with the Joker killing people and forcing them to make unethical decisions.  It also continuously ‘wastes’ it’s characters by simply killing them off for no reason.
The star of the show is no longer Batman; it’s the Joker, who has seemingly stolen the spotlight now in terms of commercial and advertising for the movie.  The Joker spends a lot of his time on film killing a bunch of people and always tempting Batman (though Heath Ledger does an incredible job).  The second half of the movie is also dominated by action.  The story is okay I guess, just too basic while trying to intertwine a bunch of subplots, and Gotham City is portrayed much less gritty then in Batman Begins.
What I was astounded by was the acting; every actor and actress in the movie did such a wonderful, confident, splendid, and very impressive job.  Several of the actors needed to have been nominated for an Academy Award or something like that, and the script was well written.  Inevitably, the Dark Knight was much more successful both critically and financially then it’s predecessor.  Dark, brooding and violent, the Dark Knight had too many ups and downs.
Grade: C+
