Jurassic Park (1993, PG-13)

Jurassic Park is based off of the best-selling novel where top scientists clone prehistoric dinosaurs using DNA found from fossilized mosquitoes, and plan to show the world them in a theme park called Jurassic Park on an island off the coast of Costa Rica.  Before the theme park is released, other top scientists and businessmen are invited to the park to get a firsthand look and to give their opinion.  But a double agent working for a different company steals the embryos to more dinosaurs, and shuts off the electric gate keeping the dinosaurs enclosed.  Thus the dinosaurs are released and go on a rampage throughout the island, with the people caught up in it.  Jurassic Park was enjoyable and the special effects on the dinosaurs were spectacular and so real looking.
The nice thing about the film is that it covers what is also going on around: the double-agent guy and his plot to steal the embryos, to the people trapped within the island, and the people trying to get them out.  The movie has very tense and exciting scenes with the very real looking dinosaurs.  At times, it makes you feel as if you are there.  On the other hand, the movie won’t appeal to some (people not wanting to watch creepy dinosaurs attacking and killing people), and a couple of times the dinosaurs are allowed to go on a killing spree for the purpose of killing more people for a more exciting film.
At the time of its release, the Steven Spielberg directed Jurassic Park was the highest grossing movie of all time, but lost out afterwards to Titanic and later Avatar.
Jurassic Park will leave you watching to the end, though it is not a full classic.  It also started a franchise with a few disappointing sequels.
Grade: B+
