Invictus is set in 1995, and tells the story of how the South African rugby team, the Springboks, rose up to unite the country of South Africa under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, right after the country has suffered under years of apartheid.
The first third of the movie gets off to a slow and tedious start, and at first the movie feels that it could be heading a little downhill, but it slowly builds up to the climatic, 20 minute final rugby game in the end of the film where the South Africans take on the New Zealanders, the world champions. The movie was very inspiring and gives us a very good look at South Africa being reunited from both Mandela’s and the Springbok’s captain’s points of view. The movie was also interesting and informative throughout. It gives us a unique look at the troubles of South Africa.
Of course, Invictus probably won’t appeal to kids as much it will adults (those who are interested in this sort of stuff). I wish it did.
Morgan Freeman gives one of his most important performances in the role of South African President Nelson Mandela. The secondary star Matt Damon is better known for his Jason Bourne and other action films but gives a reasonable turn in playing the captain of the rugby team that could have been acted just as well by other actors.
Clint Eastwood directed Invictus; the title is based off of a poem that Mandela reads to the rugby captain.
