Black Hawk Down (2001, R): ***
Watch a movie like Black Hawk Down, and then watch how some of those politicians can derive scorn to the servicemen in the US Military. Watching a movie as realistic as Black Hawk Down makes me want to punch those politicians right in the face. Black Hawk Down is a harrowing portrait of modern warfare, and so far, the best depiction of that subject yet. In that respect, Black Hawk Down isn’t exactly a movie that we watch for our enjoyment, instead, Black Hawk Down is a tribute to the US Army Rangers and all of the soldiers who participated in the Mogadishu fiasco in 1993. Black Hawk Down is a very good war film, but alas, what keeps it from being a great one is due to the fact that it’s hampered by some unfocused storytelling and undefined characters. Don’t get me wrong: war is very chaotic and Black Hawk Down succeeds in showing this. But I just didn't feel for what quite a few of it's characters were going through, and the effects that the stenching battle had upon them. On the other hand, there were quite a few other characters where it was completely the opposite for me. Black Hawk Down is still very worth watching, and if you simply want to see a visual, firsthand account of what our military personnel really do sign up and train hard for, I can assure you that Black Hawk Down will provide a compelling example of this. Directed by Ridley Scott.
