Movie Review: the Dark Knight

The Dark Knight (2008, PG-13): ** ½

There has been so much hype surrounding the Dark Knight that I can’t explain all of it.  I can’t believe all the critical praise that it has received.  Brilliant, heart pounding, excellent, dark, tragic; these are just a few of the terms I have seen or heard of to describe this sequel to the 2005 Batman Begins, which is a far better film than this.  The Dark Knight is a movie that tramples itself over by including too many subplots, needlessly killing off a good portion of its supporting characters, and by making the real star of the show the Joker, who has seemingly stolen the spotlight.  It’s a two and a half hour long superhero movie that’s really an overlong crime drama, and the last act of the film is dominated by action.  There are a few noteworthy points: the acting is phenomenal, the script writing is professionally top notch, and for all of its ups and downs, the Dark Knight manages to pull off some exhilarating, thrill moments.  Ultimately, I suppose I can see why the Dark Knight has managed to please so many people, but alas for me, it never reached any level of brilliance, and as such, I consider it to be an over acclaimed movie.  Directed by Christopher Nolan.
