The Cowboys (1972, PG)

One of Wayne's better crafted pics, even though it doesn't take itself all that seriously.  Fortunately, the Cowboys has even storytelling, nice pacing, a few likeable characters (as well as some contrasting unlikeable ones), and the movie itself is well crafted then most of Wayne's 70s westerns.  The Cowboys is a western to enjoy, despite Wayne's infamous tragic death scene where the main bad guy pumps six bullets into Wayne's character (sorry I gave away a spoiler).  But of course, the kids take out the revenge on the bad guys purely western style, using the expierence Wayne taught them throughout the movie.  By the end of the movie, not just the fictitous characters, but the child actors themselves, and maybe even we, seem to have learned a little something each from Wayne during the filming of the movie. The Cowboys is alive with humor, drama, comedy, violence and a hint of comedic romance.  It also offers a nice first-hand look at cattle herding trail riding back in the real western days.  If your a fan of Wayne, then the Cowboys is a must see, and it's also worth a quick look even if your not.  Directed by Mark Rydell.
