I wasn't too enthusiastic about Secretariat. That changed after I started watching it. Because then I started thinking that Secretariat really wasn't too bad. What I realized it's a good, appropriate, family, Disney pic.
The plot is based on a true story, but nevertheless simple and predictable. There's a horse named Red that no one really likes that much except for Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) a house wife who is given control of her father's farm after he passes. She has faith in Red, and against the odds, hires horse trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich) to enter Red into the Kentucky Derby, and he goes on to be one of the best and most famous horses in the horse racing buisness.
Directed by Randall Wallace, Secretariat is what it is: it's light family entertainment. And like most movies like that, it doesn't add that much depth to it, there are no Oscar-worthy performances or direction, but it's nevertheless entertaining fun.
*** ½ /5
