Here is a movie that I can enjoy every time I watch it. Here is a movie that's considerably underrated. Here is a movie that's a good movie, because it's so much fun!
At first glance, National Treasure will only seem like a rip off to the classic Indiana Jones series. If you take it a different way, then it will come off as a cheap ride that feels like a theme park attraction (Jurassic Park III somehow pops into my mind).
As a matter of fact, National Treasure is so entertaining and so much fun, that I can still remember how excited I was on my first viewing of it. The plot a simple, probably familiar one: over the centuries of history, a vast treasure was collected. People fought to protect it and to steal it, but it didn't take long until it vanished. People tried and failed to find it. One cryptologist, Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) has been fascinated with the treasure, which is said to be too much for one man, all his life. He enlists the help of a few friends to track it down by finding all the clues. In the Arctic, they find their first clue in a Colonial ship, the Charlotte. When one of his friends, Ian (Sean Bean) turns on him, Ben and another of his friends, Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) must race to find the treasure before Ian, which means literally stealing the Declaration of Independence (I won't say more, as I don't want to spoil all the fun for those who have not yet seen the movie).
Any way, National Treasure is a rare action film that can be watched by families, mainly because it's appropriate, just as well as it is entertaining.
There is plenty of action sequences, mystery, humor and romance to make National Treasure a worthwhile pic.
I'm not saying that National Treasure is the most original film, even for a treasure hunting film, to be released to theaters. But it is probably the most fun. It works quite well as a fun ride, and in that sense, is definitely worth the watch. It's a worthwhile piece of Disney popcorn entertainment.
It's directed by Jon Turteltaub.
