X-Men: the Last Stand (2006, PG-13)

The Last Stand is climatic, but also disappointing.  In other words, it’s a movie that concentrates more so on becoming the decisive action flick of the summer over being a good movie.  The Last Stand became a world-wide box office hit, becoming the highest-grossing movie of the franchise.  However, it is of lesser quality then both of its predecessors.

The Last Stand wraps up the battle between humans and mutants, and then between the good mutants and the bad mutants.  The same ensemble cast is all here as before: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, James Marsden, Anna Paquin, Famke Janssen and more.

This time around, the humans have developed a ‘cure’ for mutants, which take away their special powers.  The US government begins issuing guns that can shoot these at mutants.  It’s all one big war, and the end has the real hero, Wolverine, running around killing bad guy mutants with his claws.

Bryan Singer, the director of both the previous movies, handed over control to Brett Ratner (Singer wanted to work on the 5th Superman movie, Superman Returns).  I don’t know if it was Ratner’s fault that this movie didn’t come out the way it should have.

The Last Stand arguably has slightly bigger and better special effects then either its predecessors.  Even so, it lacks a decent storyline, and kills off a couple of necessary characters early on.

The one thing that might be improved over the other two is some of the acting.  A lot of the actors have been acting in the X-Men franchise for some time now, therefore I like to see that they know their characters and actually know what they’re doing.

This is a disappointing summer action pic.  It never escalates to the triumphant finale it could have been.
