The War of the Worlds (2005, PG-13)

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise collaborate together again after their hit film Minority Report.  War of the Worlds, set in modern day America, New Jersey, is an entertaining though messy sci-fi adventure.

Tom Cruise takes the lead role as the divorced father of a family, who’s in charge of his kids over the weekend.  Coincidentally, Martians attack Earth at the same time in their giant tripods and exterminate everything in their path.  It’s up to Cruise, who can’t resist as an action-hero, to save the day and even take down a tripod or two single handedly.

The book, which was originally written by H.G Wells in late 1800s London, is a very well known book that has been copied and parodied too many times.  The updated Spielberg/Cruise version takes switches it to a modern-day United States setting.

Morgan Freeman gives a nice turn in as the unknown narrator of the story, though ultimately the movie is marred by a weak and unexciting ending, and Cruise cannot save that from happening.  Spielberg has directed a lot of well-known and better films: Jaws, Close Encounters from the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones series, E.T and so on.  He has taken a wrong turn in War of the Worlds, but the truth is he could have made it better, more true and accurate to its source material.

Wells, the author of the original book, would not recognize this take on his famous novel.
