Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl (2003, PG-13)

Here is a fun, action-adventure movie that is in the tradition of the pirate legend.  It’s also an entertaining, swashbuckling adventure that does run a little too long at almost 2 and 20 minutes.  Director Gore Verbinski and all of the actors put forth a lot of effort and energy to make a truly worthwhile and entertaining pic.

The film stars Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, who has gone on to become an iconic film figure.  Sparrow is a swaggering pirate who always talks his way out of things.  However, years ago, his treacherous first mate Captain Barbossa and his crew marooned him on an island and took his dear ship, the Black Pearl.  10 or so years later, Jack is seeking out revenge.  When Barbossa arrives at Port Royal, Jamaica, and shoots up the place, he steals the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann, for unknown reasons.  Jack teams up with Will Turner, the local blacksmith who has feelings for Swann, and set out after Barbossa.  It turns out that Barbossa and his crew are cursed; they live forever, cannot die, cannot eat and cannot drink.  They need the blood of a Turner relative, it’s never explained why, to be bestowed upon the Aztec gold from which cursed them.

The film stars Johnny Depp, who does a very good job, as he is a very talented actor in Hollywood and this film pretty much leaped him into further stardom.  Geoffrey Rush is Barbossa; Barbossa’s not so much an iconic film figure, but Rush does a near equally impressive job.  Orlando Bloom, fresh from co-starring as Legolas in the fantasy epic Lord of the Rings is Will Turner.  Bloom may have done an honest job, though Depp’s and Rush’s roles are far more memorable. Kiera Knightley is the headstrong Ms. Swann.

The Curse of the Black Pearl is a wild, and in the end, exhausting ride that will leave you both tired but satisfied.  In my opinion, I liked it a lot better then I originally thought I would, and thought it was also one of Disney’s more memorable and funner rides in a while.  Depp adds the humor and the charm.  So much energy he pact into the role, so that Depp alone made Sparrow as one of the most iconic and likeable film characters of the 21st century.

While the film does run a little long and is nearly action-packed from beginning to end, it doesn’t lose the thrills and its appeal.

The Curse of the Black Pearl launched a multi-billion dollar franchise and spawned quite a number of sequels, all of which weren't near as good as this.

This is a good, untamed adventure.  It’s not a masterful, very well-done film.  But it is a solid piece of entertainment.  And for the audience, that's all that matters.
