The Mummy Returns (2001, PG-13)

The Mummy Returns is in the same tradition was previously, but this sequel comes in with more confusing plotlines and also not as much fun.

Thousands of years ago, the Scorpion King (Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson, who has too little screen time), lead his army on a vast campaign to conquer the known world.  However, after seven years, his army was defeated in battle, and he was left the only survivor.  He begs for help at the Egyptian god Anubis, who grants him an army of jackal people who defeat his enemies.  After that, Anubis reclaims his soul.  Meanwhile, seven years after the events previously, Rick (Brenden Fraser) and Evie (Rachel Weisz) have married and have a son, Alex, who has a high, upper class English accent.  They get caught up in another adventure, when Imhotep is resurrected again by an Egyptian cult who wants to use him to defeat the Scorpion King and take command of the Army of Anubis.  When Alex is captured, the O’Connell’s are in for another wild adventure ride again.

The Mummy Returns feels more like a ride through a theme park ride then an adventure movie.  The special effects are even cheesier then before.  Nevertheless, the acting has improved a little then before.

There are a few flashback sequences, I won’t release plot details, but it was all too confusing and complicated and only added a needless subplot.

I almost laughed when the group gets attacked by an army of pygmy mummies.  The whole sequences was adventurous yet comical.  In addition, the Scorpion King arrives in the end as half scorpion, half man, and the CGI effects for him look bad.

The Mummy Returns still had all the adventure, the wit, and the comedy, but on the whole, I was entirely displeased by this unimpressive sequel.
