The Mummy (1999, PG-13)

The Mummy is pure cheesy, campy, action horror fun.  The acting is the same way; it’s lowly, the script is clichéd and all that, but it’s also untainted theater entertainment, and a remake of the old

The film is set in the late 1920s, where adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brenden Fraser), teams up with the clumsy Egyptologist librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her bumbling brother Jonathan (John Hannah) to go on an expedition to Hamumaptra for riches and treasure.  Their expedition is being constantly overshadowed by a larger, American expedition as well.  They end up waking up the Egyptian priest Imhotep, who was granted immortality, and then buried alive after his tongue was cut off because he became lover to the Pharaoh’s wife.  The resurrected Imhotep releases the 10 Egyptian curses upon the world, and it’s up to O’Connell to act like Indiana Jones and stop the vicious Mummy

The acting was so-so, the direction was all too horrible and the screen writing needed some improvement here and there.  But I was entertained and amused by all of it.  Fraser is no Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, but his performance was comical and he fit the role fine.

For what it was worth, the Mummy was a blast, but it was hardly anything in terms of a cinematic achievement.  The special effects were clearly all computer animated, with legions of CGI mummies running around hacking and slashing at our band of heroes.  At best, this is theater popcorn entertainment.

The Mummy was by no means a great movie; in fact, I don’t even think it was even a very good one, but it’s a film I’m still glad I saw.  It gives us an exciting action horror flick.
