Clash of the Titans (2010, PG-13)

A remake of the 1981 successful film, this redo is not much more than a simple minded fantasy action flick, and one that serves little overall purpose.

Somewhat entertaining, the film retells the story of Perseus (Sam Worthington, the star of Avatar).  The humans at Argos have become too full of pride, and have declared war on the gods, who in retaliation declare that Princess Andromeda must be scarified, or the horrible sea monster the Kraken will destroy Argos.  The demigod Perseus (he’s the son of Zeus), joins forces with a Greek military unit on a journey to seek out and find a way to destroy the Kraken.

Clash of the Titans suffers from nearly relentless, overlong action sequences, as well as detached characters that weaken its overall structure.  I didn’t necessarily find myself rooting for Perseus’ success, maybe partly because his character is stiff and flat.

At most, Clash of the Titans is something to go see at the theater, or to rent and watch on a wet, rainy day.  People will like the CGI special effects as usual, which I this time did not think was actually that bad (compared to the Mummy, the special effects look visually impressive).

Throughout the story, there was hardly any humor.  The story itself was firm and unbendable, and very straightforward.  The direction and acting don’t offer much to talk about on the whole.

As is the case with most successful Hollywood adventure pics, a couple of sequels are confirmed to form a trilogy.

Weak on its heart, I did originally expect a little more out of this.  On the whole, it wasn’t horrible (it could have been worse), but Clash of the Titans is the first of 2010’s summer box-office disappointments.
