Based off of the popular comic book series by Marvel, Spider-Man introduces the character of Peter Parker on film, as he becomes the superhero of New York, Spider-Man.
Parker is a nerdy high school student whose social life is a little awkward. Well, on a field trip to a lab where scientists have turned a bunch of spiders into 15 super spiders, Parker is bitten by one, and thus, becomes Spider-Man. The film doesn’t just follow Parker—it also follows the head of a failing corporation/Parker’s best friend’s dad who turns himself into the evil Green Goblin to save his company but ends up going insane and crazy. Of course, it’s not long before Spider-man and Green Goblin go head to head. The movie follows Parker and his life as being Spider-man and from what I hear and read it follows the original comic book story closely.
Tobey Maguire is well cast as the web-slinger, bringing that nerdy teen feel at first but later gaining the power to become spider-man--with great power comes great responisbility. Willem Dafoe also gives a nearly pshycological yet entertaining performance as the Green Goblin.
The CGI effects were good but not overwhelming, and the script could have been tweaked to make it better. The acting was convincing enough. A massive success at the box-office and receiving high positive reviews critically, a sequel was green lit. Spider-Man has a generally lighter tone then a lot of superhero films, something that the comic book was meant to be.
